This report has been produced to incorporate IMPEL’s views within the Remas project, and in with particular reference to the development of the ‘Remas Criteria’. The Remas project is co-funded by the EU LIFE-Environment programme, the UK Environment Agency, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and the Irish Environmental Protection Agency. The project aims to reach a consensus on the value of independently certified environmental management system (EMS) to the environmental regulator, and to identify which voluntary compliance measures most effectively protect the environment and why. The ‘Remas Criteria’ are defined as those elements of an EMS that are considered to be key to improving environmental performance and aiding regulation.
