Exploring Complementary Approaches/ 2012
This document is the final report of an IMPEL project that explored using complementary approaches alongside environmental inspections to improve compliance. The report defines these approaches, categorizes them, and examines their effectiveness through surveys of IMPEL members and other environmental regulators, along with reviews of relevant publications and insights from experts and academics. The report concludes that while complementary approaches can significantly contribute to achieving compliance and environmental outcomes, their effectiveness needs to be consistently evaluated, and regulators need to develop strategies to select the right approaches based on factors like the regulated company's size, sector, and motivations.
